Here We Are

Here we are,
Together standing on the Earth,
Like a rubber soul on a hot sunny day,
We feel protected.

And in the hands of everyone,
We can lift or pull down,
Yet the pathway to all the dreams,
Is upward bound.

No one of us looks down,
On the days opening to the light,
If we learn, if we open hearts,
Darkness will be only restful.

Here we are,
Am I to shine today,
Amongst my millions of my kind,
And live enlightened.

The Mountain Sky is Written

Above the city I sit, small light glaring on the empty page, the city lights twinkling like the stars above my head, complete silence, complete gratitude, completely surrounded by the astoundingly large world around me, I am small.

My words, such little descriptions of captured feelings, I am the transparency between the veil of the mountain reaching the inviting heaven upon this peak, like a conductor from the sky my pen hits the page imprinting the silhouettes of letters like birds flying into the moonlight.

Crafting words to describe the sensation of battling to the top of a mountain in the midnight darkness, my legs measure the journey, my skin weathers the terrain, and my heart joyously pounds in victory while my breath slowly evades my body into the crisp thin air. To this I am labored, to this I am free.

Sleep well valley below, these mountainous walls will protect you and as I sit above viewing the millions below I am one, but the journey down slowly erodes the precious moment experienced as I become integrated back into the millions, away from the untouched, away from the away, hoping this captured thought on paper can somehow take me back when I'm in need.

Drake the Dragon

Drake and his rake went out to the lake and strolled across the sand,
Drake liked to rake from shore to shore and all across the land.
One day he was raking, out sifting and shaking, when he came upon a shiny thing,
He dusted it off, with a nose wrinkle and cough, and discovered it was a ring.

He tossed it into his pocket, right next to his locket, and headed right home to bed,
His mother came in, sang songs to begin, before she brought out 3 stories to be read.
When she left the room, Drake grabbed his tiny broom, and went to his tiny red wagon,
Where he had placed the ring, the beautiful thing, he put it on and suddenly became a dragon.

Within a glance, out came a tail from his pants, and two wings sprouted right from his back,
His belly popped out, his legs grew enormous and stout, as he ate from a table a snack,
I am Drake the Dragon, he roared from his wagon, and flew out the window real high,
And when I put on this ring, I can become anything, and a Dragon I'll be in the sky.

The powers were bold, this ring couldn't be sold, but Drake new that his rake brought him money,
So he flew to the moon, in the cool night of June, to see if the ring would still work while its sunny,
Sure enough it did not, only at night time it brought, the special power to be anything,
So Drake headed back to his bed, before the morning sun hit his head, and slowly took off the ring.

Morning came and there was Drake, back with his rake, not a scale or a tail to be waggin',
He slowly opened his eyes, and to his suprise, in arms was his stuffed animal dragon.

The Inspiration of the University of Utah Hospital

To those who put long nights in, made the grades, past the tests,
To those who knew no other path, than to give of their heart only the best.

My gratitude.

For the lives of my three children, and the strength of my wife,
Are the blessings of my today, the wholeness of my life.

You might be called a Doctor, a nurse, the medical staff or CNA,
But all of you share a common thread inside your DNA.

Amazing.

Amazing that you leave your family from a trip or in the middle of the night,
Amazing you arrive to assure all is well, in the dimness of the hospital light.
Amazing that your hand won’t waver, through a surgery hours long,
Amazing is your focus, your compassion, your dedication and always being strong.
Amazing that those you serve aren’t family, yet you become and affect the family tree,
Amazing is the calm, the teamwork, the miracles that occur in the state of emergency.
Amazing is each bedside story, each last held hand and routine care,
Amazing when you take the time to help each person understand why they’re there.

It was never a title that put me at ease, it was the human behind the being,
Giving the patient a chance to feel better, a freedom from burden worth seeing.

It was a gentle smile from the custodial staff, a medical student assisting with directions,
A pharmacy member coming from behind the counter, to show a distressed patient some affection.
A valet parking member with a positive attitude, saying “no worries, come to the front of the line”,
And the chef in the kitchen telling a hungry patient he added blessings for all to be fine.

My gratitude.

Remember, the minute you think what you do, doesn’t affect children, a husband or wife,
Is the moment you could have helped save or forever positively changed someone’s life.

The Electricity of Our Connection

The electricity when we first met, could light the evening sky,
We surrendered who we were alone, together we could fly,

The electricity has calmed down, with kids we can agree,
But our flame is now a candle, as we raise our family,
And all I need is to see your face, and it reminds me of our core,
Making it easy to love you the next 50 years and more.

I’m told that in the first 5 years, is when relationships often fail,
My first 5 years with you, has just hoisted up my dreamers sail.
And never for a moment, has my compass pointed another direction,
Then to you each night and morning, you have all my heart’s affection.

Remember under the trees, where we slept out under the stars,
Like the heavens opened up their arms, making music of the passing cars.

The electricity has calmed down, with kids we can agree,
But our flame is still the candle, lighting each romantic memory,
And all I need is to see your face, and it reminds me of our core,
Making it easy to love you the next 50 years and more.

We don’t need an electric storm, I love you just the same,
In fact just holding your hand will do, next to our candle flame.

Family Tree Dreams

My dreams may have been scattered,
Still in tact not shattered,
With two more boys will make 3 sons,
And my wife and I aren’t the only ones.

Our parents came before us,
Balanced life and the family chorus,
To sound the bells of a family tree,
That cares, that loves, a life spirited and free.

Its not a mid life crisis now,
It’s a time to reflect on why, on how,
For in my dream was my family tree,
Now to support our growth creatively.

I’ve been a writer all my life,
Of stories, memories, joyous or of strife,
Can I write a script that I’ll be happy doing?
That I can tell my kids, my dreams I’m pursuing.

Can I become the person I’ve known inside,
Unleash my power and no longer hide,
Let my talents flourish unjudged and undivided,
Relinquish my calling and not let the day go undecided.

I believe I can, I believe in me,
This is my way of touching life, and strengthening my family,
For in these words you read right now,
Is my why, is my how.
